Pietra was born and raised in Italy where she naturally developed a love of art. Since she was a young girl the American West has fascinated her. Her dream to live in the West came true in 1982 when she married David and made Utah her home. David is a native of Utah and grew up camping, hiking and enjoying the outdoors. Their different backgrounds and cultures have played an important role in the development of their artwork. They compliment each other and play off of each other’s strength. Pietra is more “right-brained” and abstract; David is more “left-brained” and concrete. Together their talents combine to create art that is both unique and aesthetic. Their art reflects how well they work together. Pietra likes to say, “The best part of our work is that not only do we enjoy doing it, but we love doing it together.” During years of experimenting with leather and its many properties, they have developed techniques that have given their work a very distinctive look. By using these skills together with traditional techniques they combine leather with other natural elements such as stone, copper, shells and wood to create earthy contemporary pieces. They have shown their work at art shows throughout the West and have won Best of Show awards in Whitefish Arts Festival, Hockaday Arts in the Park and Teton Village Art Show, as well as Best of Category for many years in Tempe Festival of the Arts. |
